Gonzaga Prep grad takes path less traveled
SPOKANE, Wash. - Drisana Spratt is like any other graduating high school senior with hopes, dreams and ambitions of her own. Though her plans are a bit different than your average grad.

Drisana is planning to take a vow of chastity, poverty and obedience when she becomes a nun with the Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Church in Spokane.

Drisana became a Catholic in the third grade and became serious about it when she was 12. That's when she met a few nuns from Alhambra, California and decided there was a good chance this was what she wanted to do.

"I just felt very possibly God was calling me to live this life," says Drisana.

Drisana says she initially wanted to become a teacher. Currently she teaches Sunday School in her spare time, along with working at AvalonCareCenter (a nursing home) and is also involved in her church's youth group and Missionaries of Charity. Recently she received the Bishop Skystad Award for students "who excelled in the study and practice of their religion."

Drisana will now enter a six year program designed to prepare potential nuns to take their vows.

She'll enter candidacy in August and her candidacy will be followed by a year in postulancy and two years in the novitiate.

Spratt says she is simply following God's will, something that could include teaching or even marriage down the line - if she hears God calling her in a different direction.

Drisana assisted with her financial needs, making entrance possible now.
